Exploring the (discontinued) hybrid Debian GNU/kFreeBSD distribution
For decades, Linux and BSD have stood as two dominant yet fundamentally different branches of the Unix-like operating system world. While Linux distributions, such as Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora, have grown to dominate the open-source ecosystem, BSD-based systems like FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD have remained the preferred choice for those seeking security, performance, and licensing flexibility. ⦠ā Read more

NixBSD: an unofficial NixOS fork with a FreeBSD kernel
NixBSD is an attempt to make a reproducible and declarable BSD, based on NixOS. Although theoretically much of this work could be copied to build other BSDs, all work thus far has been focused on building a FreeBSD distribution. ā« NixBSD GitHub page Look, itās my job to make sure I use and am familiar with as many operating systems and related tools as possible. Had to turn my freeBSD pet computer off in hopes of saving a couple of pennies off of the power bill. š„² And having had a blast spending time living in tty earlier this year, I thinking about daily driving the RPi4B for a while and let the main beast hibernate as well š§
@discoverbsdthebsdcommunitylinklog@feeds.twtxt.net This is interesting. Not giving up on #FreeBSD #jails yet but definitely have to give this a try; and if my #podman workflow goes as smooth as it does on #Linux I might just end up installing FreeBSD on the #RaspberryPi too! š„³
although the only #Go things Iām running in there are a WriteFreely blog and the Saltyd #SaltyIM broker ⦠each running in separate #FreeBSD #jail, those are still running the 14.1-Release (at the moment) anyways.
Upgrading my FreeBSD box to 14.2-RELEASE ⦠I may have read something about some-Go-thing breaking but š¤
freebsd makes a lovely server os, nixing it would be fucking excellent. i wonder if they ported systemd? shitās making me curious
Iām still alive ! Hereās a quick, brainless recap dump before I switch back to the other side:
- Been daily driving FreeBSD on the o(ther)ld machine for the last couple of days.
- Read through the handbook, played around with jails, pulled on my hair because of network issues (I think I might have maybe fixed that) ⦠etc.
- Still procrastinating over migrating my Jenny/Mutt setup out there. until then, Iāll be getting my Twtxt fix reading through conversations over on the twtxt.net ā
- Gave a couple of Nostr based platforms a try, it was ⦠not for me to say the least.
- Started learning Emacs (I know, Iām in trouble LOL) and might even start twtinā from there instead.

Whatās all of this about? one may askā¦
Well Iāve been itching to toy around with a BSD on actual hardware and away from the comfort of VMs. NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD⦠It doesnāt matter. I just want to āMake it feel⦠Make it feel alive AGAIN!ā
Oh, me too: FreeBSD, macOS, and Solaris in server environments extensively, and Linux, AIX, HP/UX, Irix, probably others Iām forgetting. Plan 9 is a whole other class of thing.
I just orderd a Pi 3 from Adafruit. Im going to run a tiny, headless FreeBSD box.
