I remembered to put the camera on my tripod. The neighbors yelling around messed up the audio a bit, though. I kinda saved most parts, but it could have been still better. When I was filming Azabache, a bluetit wanted to return to its nest somewhere next to me, I assume. It was shouting extremely loudly and immediately took off again to land on another roof ridge. It’s the one in 24. I had to turn down the volume in the audio. :-D

My mate and I took advantage of the public holiday and went on a hike. At first, the 14°C and only slight wind weren’t all that terrible, especially since there were only a few clouds. Later, the sun got covered more and more and also the wind picked up. I was really glad that I brought my jacket along. In the beginning I was contemplating about leaving it at home, but then still wore it and stripped it a few minutes into the trip. It was very windy at the summit, so for our second lunch break wearing it was an absolute must. It was a very beautiful trip and I enjoyed my mate’s company.

Finally, Azabache showed up, too. I didn’t bother videoing with all the wind. Didn’t feel like fixing the audio. Maybe tomorrow.

Azabache returned just a few minutes later when the sparrow or great/blue tit was gone. Next time I will use a tripod to record the video. Also sorry about the sound, I used all my Audacity skills to remove the noise, but somehow, combining the video and audio track in kdenlive somehow messed up the sound. There’s some horrible sqealing towards the beginning.

The sun was out and tricked everybody to believe it’s nice and warm. However, with the wind, the 11°C felt way colder. Still, super nice out there, I enjoyed it a lot. The quick trip to the dairy farm took me more than double the regular time, because I took close to 400 photos. Oh boy, Lyse is such an idiot!

Has a bit of a long history story behind this, where last year at work we were reading this book called Engineering a Safer World and initially came across a service called Speech Reply that allowed me to upload a PDF copy of the book and start to read it, but unfortunately, the free trial right now before I can finish reading it turns out that Speech Reply service cost a whopping US$30 a month and expected me to pay a full year upfront, which was well over US$300 just for one fucking book! So I sent their sales and support staff a message kindly asking if it were possible to just pay for the audio transcription of just a single book or to change to a monthly subscription fee, to which they refused, so basically in the end I got very angry and told them to go fuck themselves and built my own service. A year later here we are :-)

@kiwu@twtxt.net It also greatly depends on what kind of videos you plan to record. When you go, let’s say, diving, the specs need to be probably more suited to that type of environment. What about zoom, macro shots, wide landscapes, and so on? When typically mounted on a tripod, I’d say builtin image stabilization is not required, but for more action shots, this is fairly important to not get sea sick. :-)

I’ve got a Nikon Coolpix S9300. I typically only take photos, but it also works for the occasional video. Free hand moves are quite difficult, but when mounted to a tripod, this is not too shabby. There’s absolutely no way around a (makeshift) tridpod when zooming in, though. The audio is definitely not the best, especially wind destroys everything. If I recorded more video, I would certainly want to have an external microphone.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de That sounds great! (Well, they actually must have recorded the audio with a potato or so.) You talked about pledge(…) and unveil(…) before, right? I somewhere ran across them once before. Never tried them out, but these syscalls seem to be really useful. They also have the potential to make one really rethink about software architecture. I should probably give this a try and see how I can improve my own programs.

This is like saying it’s pointless to make music yourself because some professional player/audio engineer does a better job. Really, there’s always someone or something that’s better than you at a particular job.

If we focus too much on “competition”, then yes, you can just stop doing anything. I don’t know how common this mindset is, especially among artists or creative people. 🤔 I would have assumed that many writers, for example, simply enjoy the process of writing. Am I being too naive once more? 🤣

In the past™, I used the Python KDE4 bindings. That was really nice. I could pass most stuff directly in the constructor and didn’t have to call gazillions of setters improving the experience significantly. If I ever wanted to do GUI programming again, I’d definitely go that route. There are also great Qt bindings for Python if one wanted to avoid the KDE stuff on top. The vast majority I do for myself, though, is either CLI or maybe TUI. A few web shit things, but no GUIs anymore. :-)

An official FBI document dated January 2021, obtained by the American association “Property of People” through the Freedom of Information Act.

This document summarizes the possibilities for legal access to data from nine instant messaging services: iMessage, Line, Signal, Telegram, Threema, Viber, WeChat, WhatsApp and Wickr. For each software, different judicial methods are explored, such as subpoena, search warrant, active collection of communications metadata (“Pen Register”) or connection data retention law (“18 USC§2703”). Here, in essence, is the information the FBI says it can retrieve:

• Apple iMessage: basic subscriber data; in the case of an iPhone user, investigators may be able to get their hands on message content if the user uses iCloud to synchronize iMessage messages or to back up data on their phone.

• Line: account data (image, username, e-mail address, phone number, Line ID, creation date, usage data, etc.); if the user has not activated end-to-end encryption, investigators can retrieve the texts of exchanges over a seven-day period, but not other data (audio, video, images, location).

• Signal: date and time of account creation and date of last connection.

• Telegram: IP address and phone number for investigations into confirmed terrorists, otherwise nothing.

• Threema: cryptographic fingerprint of phone number and e-mail address, push service tokens if used, public key, account creation date, last connection date.

• Viber: account data and IP address used to create the account; investigators can also access message history (date, time, source, destination).

• WeChat: basic data such as name, phone number, e-mail and IP address, but only for non-Chinese users.

• WhatsApp: the targeted person’s basic data, address book and contacts who have the targeted person in their address book; it is possible to collect message metadata in real time (“Pen Register”); message content can be retrieved via iCloud backups.

• Wickr: Date and time of account creation, types of terminal on which the application is installed, date of last connection, number of messages exchanged, external identifiers associated with the account (e-mail addresses, telephone numbers), avatar image, data linked to adding or deleting.

TL;DR Signal is the messaging system that provides the least information to investigators.
