The VTech Socratic method
We’ve had a lot of fun with VTech’s computers in the past on this blog. Usually, they’re relatively spartan computers with limited functionality, but they did make something very interesting in the late 80s. The Socrates is their hybrid video game console/computer design from 1988, and today we’ll start tearing into it. ↫ Leaded Solder web log Now we’re in for the good stuff. A weird educational computer/game console/toy thing from the late ’80s, by VTech. I have a massive soft s

In-reply-to » It's extremely surprising to me that younger non-technical people just type in their full name (properly cased first and last name with a space in between) for a technical username in account registration or login forms. I've seen that happening several times in the past few years. The field name is "Benutzername" in German, literally "username". Even adding a placeholder text to signal that they could simply use their nickname in lowercase did not change anything at all. Well, one person used at least an e-mail address.

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org I guess the thing is that usernames are no longer needed for many popular things, like WhatsApp. “Just install the app”, done. When I ran my Matrix server for our family, this was the first thing that people were bummed out about: “Oh, this needs a username and a password? Why doesn’t it just work? That’s annoying.”

People are less and less exposed to “low-level” details like this. There was also this story in 2021 about the concept of a “file”: https://www.theverge.com/22684730/students-file-folder-directory-structure-education-gen-z

In-reply-to » I heard that congratulations to Germany are in order, is that right? If so, congratulations!

Na, you’re spot on, @movq@www.uninformativ.de! The result is an expected, terrible disaster. It just seems the absolute catastrophy is delayed for another four years.

Even though I’m the last one who wouldn’t be glad about banning the nazis, I’m not a fan of banning parties in general. I believe that a healthy democracy has to withstand extremists. Whether it’s still healthy is debatable. To me it appeared that the failed attempts to ban NPD in the past actually helped them gain more supporters.

The big established parties are all bad traitors. I blame them and their actions to help raise AfD. They just give a fuck about the ordinary people, they’re only concerned about their private gain and power. I bet nothing will change, to the contrary, it will only get worse. The winners do have the chance to turn it for the better, but they just will not. No way, unfortunately.

But then, we must not forget that people are just dumb and stupid, too. Also, that won’t change. AfD won’t help these idiots either, but they still vote for them. I also don’t understand how there is still so much support for the other big parties left. Education is important. Very important. But I have the impression that we’re lacking it.

Short summary of Project2025 and Trump’s plans for the US:

  • Abolish the Federal Reserve
Why? To end what is seen as an unelected, centralized body that exerts too much influence over the economy and monetary policy, replacing it with a more transparent, market-driven approach.

  • Implement a national consumption tax
Why? To replace the current federal income tax system, simplify taxation, and increase government revenue through a broader base that includes all consumers.

  • Lower corporate tax rates
Why? To promote business growth, increase investment, and stimulate job creation by reducing the financial burden on companies.

  • Deregulate environmental policies
Why? To reduce government intervention in the economy, particularly in energy and natural resources sectors, and to foster a more business-friendly environment.

  • Restrict abortion access
Why? To align with conservative pro-life values and overturn or limit abortion rights, seeking to restrict the practice at a federal level.

  • Dismantle LGBTQ+ protections
Why? To roll back protections viewed as promoting LGBTQ+ rights in areas like employment and education, in line with traditional family values.

  • Eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs
Why? To end policies that are seen as divisive and to promote a merit-based system that prioritizes individual achievements over group identity.

  • Enforce stricter immigration policies, including mass deportations and detentions
Why? To prioritize border security, reduce illegal immigration, and enforce existing laws more aggressively, as part of a broader strategy to safeguard U.S. sovereignty.

  • Eliminate the Department of Education
Why? To reduce federal control over education and shift responsibilities back to local governments and private sectors, arguing that education decisions should be made closer to the community level.

  • Restructure the Department of Justice
Why? To ensure the department aligns more closely with the administration’s priorities, potentially reducing its scope or focus on areas like civil rights in favor of law-and-order policies.

  • Appoint political loyalists to key federal positions
Why? To ensure that government agencies are headed by individuals who are committed to advancing the administration’s policies, and to reduce the influence of career bureaucrats.

  • Develop training programs for appointees to execute reforms effectively
Why? To ensure that political appointees are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement the proposed changes quickly and effectively.

  • Provide a 180-day transition plan with immediate executive orders
Why? To ensure that the incoming administration can swiftly implement its agenda and make major changes early in its term without delay.

Do y’all agree with any/all/some of these poliices? Hmmm đŸ€”

This guy is just such an idiot lol.

  • There’s no such mass migration to “the south”. Tons of people are leaving Mississippi, Louisiana, Virginia, and New Mexico for instance. I don’t know enough about the states with net influxes like Texas and Florida but I suspect they have policies that make it attractive for people to move there
  • Not everybody is able to take account of long-term trends when they make housing decisions. There are financial reasons, family reasons, educational reasons, etc that impact such decisions
  • But of course, most laughably, cheap energy is fast becoming a thing of the past, and so the problem isn’t “solved” by cheap energy, it’s just kicked down the road. And ffs, cheap energy is literally causing the very heating that he pretends air conditioning will “solve”–like “solving” your drinking problem by staying drunk all the time

This oversimplification to drive some kind of political point is so embarrassing coming from someone who pretends to be a university professor. It sounds like a teenage doofus from a 1980s movie talking. He well knows all these things, but he decides to present these views anyway.

this entertainment news stream that i’ve been working on has served the dual-purpose of giving me more information to work with to point out systemic flaws that nobody will ever admit exist. i think using an entertainment medium to talk about these ideas is good because its never going to be about winning an argument. we are presenting information in a fun way for the sake of education. a lot of western people are (possibly intentionally) ignorant of their genocidal history and practices that often continue to this day. there is a lot of injustice propping up western hegemony that must be answered for. there is a lot of organizing to do to provide adequate resources to the people that western culture continually treads on. to bring back the beauty that the white man keeps trying to burn down, suppress, or kill in the name of economic progress. https://www.twitch.tv/LeftistsFiteLeftists
