Movies and TV are moving in this direction too, but at least for now, I can still access a lot of movies and shows on discs (especially from my local library). I can also make backups of my shows and movies if I have the discs available. As time goes on, new tools become available to preserve physical games. Physical games at least gives the chance of future preservation in a world where digital is locked behind DRM- assuming the full game is on the disc.

How different is this from movies no longer on discs? Even if the games were to be available on disks, my PlayStations do not have disks trays anymore. It has been six years since Sony started to sell them without a disk tray.
I see it this way: we own nothing. We borrow things for a finite time.
@bender@twtxt.net Nice! It’s been a while since I’ve watched an old samurai movie. I should throw some up on my jellyfin.

Service announcement: The only appropriate movie to watch during this heatwave is probably Barton Fink.
Happy Summer Solstice and/or Father’s Day, to those who celebrate.
I spent mine setting up a gift from my wife, a Govee TV Backlight 3 Lite, and then watching a couple of movies that really brought the colors out: Flash Gordon (1980) and Dune (2021) (with Rifftrax commentary).
I’d call that a good day.
@itsericwoodward@itsericwoodward.com When I first watched that movie (decades after it was released, probably like 10 years ago), I didn’t expect that. 😅 Feels super silly today, and all the fighting and the “look at me, I’m a strong man” stuff. 😂
Just finished watching They Live (1988) again, one of my favorite movies, and one that has (sadly) remained relevant for nearly 40 years (some might even argue it’s more relevant today than ever).
Obey. Consume. No independent thought. Honor apathy. Do not question authority.
They live, we sleep.
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org the movie gives me a glimpse, not that bad. Thank you for capturing it, mate!
The guy really felt that his silly stupid movie got exposed for being irrelevant. More people care about Star Wars than they care about me? So what? Most people don’t care about Star Wars at all. So, yes, 1 > 0. And 1 is still irrelevant.
Watched Independence Day on Disney+, 30 years after the cinema release. Still very enjoyable ★★★★ 📽️
@itsericwoordward@itsericwoodward.com Hahaha, Top secret! what a great movie.
i am trying to escape from big tech, as much as i can. spotify is just bad for artists, pays miserably plus they show ads for ICE recruitment in the US, netflix is just not interesting anymore and i don’t really wathch movies that much. the next one is paypal i think
Watched The Shape of Water on Disney+. Life is but the shipwreck of our plans. Fantastic ★★★★★ 📽️
Watched the first Pirates of the Caribbean as part of the month of Disney+ we got last week. Good fun ★★★ 📽️
Finished reading The Martian, by Andy Weir, after just four days. A very engrossing and humorous read. Time for the movie tomorrow ★★★★★ 📗
Finished reading Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir, this afternoon, just in time for catching the movie tomorrow. A really fun read ★★★★★ 📗
Bought a paperback copy of Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir. I have a week before the movie is released to finish it 📚
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org oh wow! That 10, with ice stuck in it. Those flowers rock! They remind me of “Stardust” (movie).
We woke up with 3C here. Yesterday we had 33C. Yeah, crazy.
nutts.org now has /movies and /travel pages
This was the scariest movie I’ve seen in a long time, jesus. 🤣 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_(2022_film)
Sign me in, Ulysses! https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/1368337-the-odyssey Hope there will be a Calypso and the dog scene as well.
@bender@twtxt.net It’s a great movie, enjoy! :-)
Man, I love edbrowse and the Librarian movies and TV show.
@dce@hashnix.club Nope. 😃 What’s that genre called? Sounds like old horror movies from the 70’ies (or it could be a soundtrack to Salad Fingers, if anyone remembers that).
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org a content warning is a way to tell the audience the content they are about to see is (or might be) shocking, or unsuitable, or unlikable. The audience can then chose to see it, or not. You know, akin of movies stating:
“Warning: The following film contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised.”

What's Missing from "Retro"
~softwarepagan
------------------------------------------------------------------
You know, often, when I say I miss older ways of computing or
connecting online, people tell me "there's nothing stopping you
from doing that now!" and they are technicay correct in most cases
(though I can't, for example, chat with friends on MSN ever
again...) However, let me explain that while this type of thing can
*sort of* fill that hole in my heart, it isn't *the same.*
Say, for example, I wanted to connect with others over a BBS. This
wouldn't offer the same types of connections it used to. While
there are BBSes around with active users, they're no longer there
to discuss movies, Star Trek, D&D, games, etc. They're there to
discuss *BBSes.* The same can be said for Gopher, old-school forums
and all sorts of revival projects (such as Escargot, Spacehey,
etc.) Retrocomputing enthusiasts, while they have a variety of
interests, are often in these spaces to discuss the medium itself
and not other topics. This exists at a stark contrast from how
things were in the past, where a non-tech-inclined person may learn
the tech to connect with likeminded others (as I did as a
Zelda-obsessed kid.)
The same can be said of old media. People will say "well, nobody is
stopping you from watching old shows/movies now!" Again, they are
technically correct. I can go home right now and watch *Star Trek:
The Next Generation* to my heart's content. It will never again,
however, be current, or new. When something is new, it serves as a
shared cultural experience. Remember how "Game of Thrones* felt in
the mid-to-late 2010s? Yeah, that.
It's sad. I sustain myself on a mixed diet of old things, new
things, and new things intended for old millenials like me who like
old things. It can be bittersweet.
Ended up watching Electric Dreams (1984) to celebrate my first GNU contribution. Such a great movie! Soundtrack and visuals spot on.

@prologic@twtxt.net I only buy stuff like that, for example games on GOG.COM. Or simply CDs or DVDs. (Rarely I “buy” a movie on some popular streaming service, fully aware that this is just “renting it”.)
But yeah, I sadly have to agree with @bender@twtxt.net. 😢
Just watched ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ … again. Love that movie.
@prologic@twtxt.net oops, I’m sorry to see disagreement leading to draining emotions.
It remind me a bit of the Conclave movie where every part wanted to defend their vision and there is only a winner. If one wins the other loses. Like the political side of many leaders and volunteers representing a broad community. I don’t think that’s the case here. Most of us (in not all) should ‘win’.
I can only add that isn’t nice to listen that ‘my idea and effort’ is not what the rest of the people expect. I personally have a kind of issue with public rejection, but I also like to argue, discuss and even fight a bit. “A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials,” they say.
This exercise and belonging to this community also brings me good feelings of smart people trying to solve a human and technical problem, which is insanely difficult to get ‘right’.
I genuinely hope we can understand each other, and even with our different and respectful thoughts on the same thing, we might reach an agreement on what’s the best for most people.
Good vibes to everyone!
That’s pretty darn neat, the little indie movie (‘Flow’) made in Blender beat out some Disney/Pixar heavyweights. I actually watched it a month or so ago, nice little movie. It’s not the highest detailed animation or anything, but it has a style that it makes work.
Blender-Rendered Movie ‘Flow’ Wins Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Beating Pixar
It’s a feature-length film “rendered on a free and open-source software platform called Blender,” reports Reuters. And it just won the Oscar for best animated feature film, beating movies from major studios like Disney/Pixar and Dreamworks.
In January Blender.org called Flow “the manifestation of Blender’s mission, … ⌘ Read more

No way, I can’t believe my friend said the trolls movie was better than shrek and no one here seems to care at all. When I let him use my Macbook to say that I was expecting people to get real mad
Movies recently have been so lackluster for me. The only one I was remotely interested in seeing was Oppenheimer, but it was too long for my tastes.
And don’t even get me started on the Trolls Movie, A Masterpiece. Even Shrek crumbles under it. 100000000000 - 10 watching it everyday.
The Emoji Movie is and hidden gem, and is underrated. I give it a 10 - 10 Would recommend for Cinema dates ;)
