@prologic@twtxt.net Itās all Iām using ⦠I have barely touched any other social media since Iāve discovered Twtxt back in April š maybe a little bit of Mastodon and IRC, bluesky even less, but nothing else worth mentioning.
@prologic@twtxt.net didnāt it already? or is it just me and my social bubble? š¤
@prologic@twtxt.net you should see This ! The devs were already trying to figure things out for TWTXT and Yarn.social š
On the Subject of Feed Identities; I propose the following:
- Generate a Private/Public ED25519 key pair
- Use this key pair to sign your Twtxt feed
- Use it as your feedās identity in place of
# url =as# key = ...
For example:
$ ssh-keygen -f prologic@twtxt.net
$ ssh-keygen -Y sign -n prologic@twtxt.net -f prologic@twtxt.net twtxt.txt
And your feed would looke like:
# nick = prologic
# key = SHA256:23OiSfuPC4zT0lVh1Y+XKh+KjP59brhZfxFHIYZkbZs
# sig = twtxt.txt.sig
# prev = j6bmlgq twtxt.txt/1
# avatar = https://twtxt.net/user/prologic/avatar#gdoicerjkh3nynyxnxawwwkearr4qllkoevtwb3req4hojx5z43q

Twt Hash extension would change of course to use a feedās ED25519 public key fingerprint.
@prologic@twtxt.net One of your twts begins with (#st3wsda): https://twtxt.net/twt/bot5z4q
Based on the twtxt.net web UI, it seems to be in reply to a twt by @cuaxolotl@sunshinegardens.org which begins āIāve been sketching outā¦ā.
But jenny thinks the hash of that twt is 6mdqxrq. At least, thereās a very twt in their feed with that hash that has the same text as appears on yarn.social (except with ā instead of ā).
Based on this, it appears jenny and yarnd disagree about the hash of the twt, or perhaps the twt was edited (though I canāt see any difference, assuming ā vs ā is just a rendering choice).
@prologic@twtxt.net I guess I thought they were search engines. Anyway, the registry API looks like a decent one for searching for tweets. Could/should yarn.social pods implement the same API?
I just manually followed the steps at https://dev.twtxt.net/doc/twthashextension.html and got 6mdqxrq. I wonder what happened. Did @cuaxolo@sunshinegardens.org edit the twt in some subtle way after twtxt.net downloaded it? I couldnāt spot a diff, other than ā appearing as ā on yarn.social, which I assume is a transformation done by twtxt.net.
@prologic@twtxt.net How does yarn.socialās API fix the problem of centralization? I still need to know whose API to use.
Say I see a twt beginning (#hash) and I want to look up the start of the thread. Is the idea that if that twt is hosted by a a yarn.social pod, it is likely to know the thread start, so I should query that particular pod for the hash? But what if no yarn.social pods are involved?
The community seems small enough that a registry server should be able to keep up, and I can have a couple of others as backups. Or I could crawl the list of feeds followed by whoever emitted the twt that prompted my query.
I have successfully used registry servers a little bit, e.g. to find a feed that mentioned a tag I was interested in. Was even thinking of making my own, if I get bored of my too many other projects :-)
@movq@www.uninformativ.de Thanks, it works!
But when I tried it out on a twt from @prologic@twtxt.net, I discovered jenny and yarn.social seem to disagree about the hash of this twt: https://twtxt.net/twt/st3wsda . jenny assigned it a hash of 6mdqxrq but the URL and prologicās reply suggest yarn.social thinks the hash is st3wsda. (And as a result, jenny āfetch-context didnāt work on prologicās twt.)

@prologic@twtxt.net I think it was some mix of phish and social engineering. She didnāt have the multifactor enabled. But i think she had clicked a message that had a fake login. She talked to someone on a phone and they made her do some things.
I never got the whole story of how it happened.
Kinda cool tool for bringing together all your timeline based data across socials.
@falsifian@www.falsifian.org by the way, on the last Saturday of every month, we generally hold a online video call/social meet up, where we just get together and talk about stuff if, youāre interested in joining us this month.
Thanks @prologic@twtxt.net! I like the way Yarn.social is making all of twtxt stronger, not just Yarn.social pods.
@prologic@twtxt.net HAHA! Couldnāt say it better. I started abandoning main stream social media as soon as is it stopped feeling like connecting and sharing with other human beings and became an urge for feeding an algorithm and hoping for itās blessing to get a glimpse of human interaction It deems worthy of having.
Iām working on getting my twtxt.txt file up to https://yarn.social standards so that it will be more than yelling in the wind.
Iām getting back into the swing of things with this distributed social.

@prologic@twtxt.net Wait! Thatās actually a Mastodon(.)social one! š¤£
Whatās that thing called when everyone on a social media platform (hardly matters which one) all post the same sort of thing. It all sounds oh so wonderful, or all so dramatic, everyone claps and cheers and thumbs up or whatever. Whatās that thing called? Thereās a term for it hmmm š§
š Okay folks, letās startup the Yarn.social calls again.
- Event: Yarn.social Online Meetup
- When: 25th May 2024 at 12:00pm UTC (midday)

Agenda:
Anything we want to talk about. Twtxt, Yarn, self hosting, cool stuff youāve been working on. chit-chat, whatever š
I think @abucci@anthony.buc.ci and @stigatle@yarn.stigatle.no are running snac? I didnāt have a closer look at snac (no intention of running it), but if that is a relatively small daemon (maybe comparable to Yarn?) that gives you access to the whole world of ActivityPub, then, well, yeah ⦠Thatās tough to beat.
Yes, I am running snac on the same VPS where I run my yarn pod. I heard of it from @stigatle@yarn.stigatle.no, so blame him š snac is written in C and is one simple executable, uses very little resources on the server, and stores everything in JSON files (no databases or other integrations; easy to save and migrate your data) . Itās definitely like yarn in that respect.
I havenāt been around yarn much lately. Part of that is that Iāve been very busy at work and home and only have a limited time to spend goofing off on a social network. Part of it is that Iām finding snac very useful: Iāve connected with friends Iād previously lost touch with, Iāve found useful work-related information, Iāve found colleagues to follow, and even found interesting conferences to attend. Thereās a lot more going on over there.
I guess if I had to put it simply, Iād say I have limited time to play and there are more kids in the ActivityPub sandbox than this one. Thatās not a ding on yarnāI like yarn and twtxtāIām just time constrained.
Is Yarn.social dead or just too niche? (uyrrria) š§

Wondering that part of the charm and attraction of Christmas markets could come from a common nostalgia towards every day street markets in towns and a longing for more outside social life during the cold, clammy Winter days.
Iāve been thinking of how to notify someone else that youāve replied to their twts.
Is there something already developed, for example on yarn.social?
Letās say I want to notify https://sour.is/tiktok/America/Denver.txt that Iāve replied to some twt. They donāt follow me back, so they wonāt see my reply.
I would send my URL to, could be, https://sour.is/tiktok/replies?url=MY_URL and theyāll check that I have a reply to some of their twts, and could decide to follow me back (after seeing my twtxt profile to avoid spam)
Another option could be having a metadata like
follow-request=https://sour.is/tiktok/America/Denver.txt TIMESTAMP_IN_SECONDS
that the other client has to look for, to ensure that the request comes from that URL (again, to avoid spam)
This could be deleted after the other .txt has your URL in the follow list, or auto-expire after X days to clean-up old requests.
What do you think?
