JUHU! Finally! The new NAS runs. Oh boy what a process. First I had to restart and redow everything three times. Sometimes things are not sooo super obvious and then you really mess up. Who decided at Asustor that you cannot move home folders off of the Volume 1? And Why are the Asustor apps so bad? Beside that, the machine, the NAS, is really nice. Updraded to 16GB RAM and I finally have NGINX PROXY MANAGER running. Now I can setup all services with nice names!
@eaplmx@twtxt.net This exact thing happened to me last night. I happened to be watching some random Youtube video, then this Ad came on, normally they are short 3-5s ads and I just tolerate them (sometimes) – But this particular ad was 20+ mins long! Somehow I kept listening to it too, despite my daughter telling me I could hit that “Skip Ad” button.
What was it you ask?! 😅 It was one of those testimonial-style, hyped up marketing videos of some product called “Gemini 2” (a currency trading app, allegedly), I kept watching all the way through, it was fantastic! 🤣
Then I went and read up on it! …
Short answer: TOTAL FUCKING SCAM 🤣
I guess Google Hangouts is finally dead.
Why is Google such a mess at making messaging apps? This has more or less been a solved problem for decades. Google Talk worked well enough, and since it was based on XMPP and Jingle it was perfectly suited to become a large-scale text/voice/video messaging system. If they’d run with that they’d have been able to dominate that space, I think. Instead, they’ve created and shitcanned half a dozen messaging apps and platforms, flailing around copying someone else’s app (now they’re trying to copy Slack I guess).

Ahora estoy pensando en hacer una versión como Progressive Web App, aunque ahora este twtxt es más como un log. Me gustaría ver si desde Web podríamos hacer una interfaz más social (en el espíritu de microblogging cómo Twitter)
@abucci@anthony.buc.ci Do you happen to use Signal btw? 🤔 If you do, it would be great if you could join the Yarn.social Signal Group (_at least until we have Group support and better apps for Salty.im 😅)

If a completely context-free self-tracking app exists, I am not aware of it. Every tracking app seems to apply only to a certain narrow topic - often sport or food. And then all the apps send the data to a central server, which makes me uncomfortable. A Syntax for Self-Tracking

iOS has had a “Shortcuts” app for a while now which is very useful for scripting things on the device, and at some point grew the ability to run things via ssh, including piping input/output. It’s how I’ve done twtxt from my phone for a while now. I’ll clean up these two examples and post to the examples I’ve shared. http://a.9srv.net/shortcuts

JavaScript : web apps
I understand the hate for JavaScript. But what option is there for writing web enabled applications for desktop / mobile?
JavaScript : web apps
wut?! 😳 seriously?! 🤦♂️
Python : small tools
Okay 👌
Go: micro services
Umm bad generalization 🤣 – Example yarnd that powers most of Yarn.social 😂
Java: enterprise software
Yes! Oh gawd yes! 🤣 And Java™ needs to die a swift death!

Hmmm? 🤔 I feel this one is going to have some backslash and/or go the way of “Hacker” being misconstrued to mean entirely different/incorrect things as is what’s happening in the media (for various definitions of “media”).

👋 Q&A: Let’s discuss the removal of Editing and Deleting your last Twt. This is something @fastidious@twtxt.net has raised to me on IRC and something I find quite a valid approach to this. Over time I believe the utility and value of “Editing” and “Deleting” one’s last Twt isn’t as valuable as we’d like and increased complexity and introduces all kinds of side-effects that are hard to manage correctly. I vote for the removal of this feature from yarnd, the mobile app nor API support this anyway…

Seems a iOS is being looked into but because it has no central server it can’t do background app like iOS requires.

When I read this I see a a niche, super premium hardware company that managed to acquire tens of thousands of customers by word of mouth. Not only that, their customers are all in-effect self employed or small businesses with huge average revenue per employee. They manage global supply chains, intense competition, all while taking on and managing huge legal/compliance risk. How is is that supposedly “dumb,” criminals can do this, and yet many of us are stretching our intellectual capacities to learn new technologies and maths, developing our nth stupid app, trying to achieve a fraction of the customer traction and revenue that street thugs manage to do every day. Are these people much smarter than average, or does it mean that if you sell something people actually want, literally nothing else matters about your intelligence, education, character, background, or anything at all. When I read these drug stories, it just reinforces for me that growth solves everything. You can succeed with a crew of violent, drug addicted idiots whose only reliable characteristic is short term thinking, and who spend half their time in prison if you have product market fit. What I’m beginning to think is that the “smarter,” people are in a company, the less anyone will want their product. It’s like the success of a venture is inversely proportional to the number of ostensible geniuses it employs. reply How Police Secretly Took over a Global Phone Network for Organized Crime | Hacker News
