In-reply-to » (#jldcvba) @shinyoukai yeah, that's the only reason why I use sub-domains when trying anything federated (I believe Matrix has the same problem), in case things didn't go as planned I can just migrate and take it down.

@prologic@twtxt.net Well, you can associate your identity to the apex domain with a bit of Webfinger wizardry, but I don’t. Mine are always attached to the sub-domains. I find it easier to migrate between instances that way without risking borking federation.

In-reply-to » I'm contemplating the idea of switching my activity pub instance from Gootosocial to a Pleroma one. While GTS is kinda cute (lightweight and easy to manage) of a software, the inability to fetch/scroll through people's past toots when visiting a profile or having access to a federated timeline and a proper search functionality ...etc felt like handicap for the past N months.

@aelaraji@aelaraji.com good luck with that! Their installation requirements, and install document in general give me headache. While on the contemplating topic, I too am contemplating shutting down my ActivityPub altogether. No GoToSocial, no nothing. I am mostly a lurker, so will not miss it much.

CAN MY FEDI INSTANCE STOP CRASHING

(it is running gotosocial which is like one of the lightest fedi servers out there. the machine it runs on is as old as a high schooler. guess the root problem)

@prologic@twtxt.net Gemini has an answer for you:

This is a conversation thread from a twtxt network, detailing a user’s (movq) frustration with the Mastodon “export data” feature and their consideration of self-hosting a fediverse alternative. Here’s a summary:

  • movq’s initial issue:
    • movq is concerned about the volatility of their data on their current Mastodon instance due to a broken “export data” feature.
    • They contacted the admins, but the issue remains unresolved.
    • This led them to contemplate self-hosting.
  • Alternative fediverse software suggestions:
    • kat suggests gotosocial as a lightweight alternative to Mastodon.
    • movq agrees, and also mentions snac as a potential option.
  • movq’s change of heart:
    • movq ultimately decides that self-hosting any fediverse software, besides twtxt, is too much effort.
  • Resolution and compromise:
    • The Mastodon admins attribute the export failure to the size of movq’s account.
    • movq decides to set their Mastodon account to auto-delete posts after approximately 180 days to manage data size.
    • Movq also mentions that they use auto-expiring links on twtxt to reduce data storage.

In-reply-to » hmmm i really should set up crowdsec and maybe a WAF like coraza or something. i don't look at my logs as much as i should because they scare me and ignorance is bliss but i should probably cut out as much false traffic as possible especially to my biggest site (superlove)

@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz i’m reading this and i already have a gts server that i could secure with this but i’m thinking it’d be best for most of my public sites https://ovelny.sh/blog/a-complete-guide-for-your-gotosocial-server/

In-reply-to » I think @abucci and @stigatle are running snac? I didn’t have a closer look at snac (no intention of running it), but if that is a relatively small daemon (maybe comparable to Yarn?) that gives you access to the whole world of ActivityPub, then, well, yeah … That’s tough to beat.

@bender@twtxt.net I have nothing against GoToSocial, but:

GoToSocial stores statuses, accounts, etc, in a database. This can be either SQLite or Postgres.

snac is simpler. Some JSON files and that’s it. I can read them with jq and less. I can use tar to back them up. I can hand edit them in a text editor.
