I’m playing around with snac2, which I think @stigatle@yarn.stigatle.no mentioned on here, and I have to say it’s extremely easy to set up and it’s been pretty straightforward so far. I wanted to experiment with having a presence on the Fediverse without going through the process of picking Mastodon vs. Gnu Social vs. Friendica vs. …, and I wanted to self-host instead of picking an instance of one of those. For now I’m abucci@buc.ci, but no guarantees that will remain stable; I’m just testing for the time being.

🤔 👋 Reconsidering moving Yarn.social's development back to Github: Speaking of which (I do not forget); @fastidious and I were discussing over a video call two nights ago, as well as @lyse who joined a bit later, about the the whole moved of all of my projects and their source code off of Github. Whilst some folks do understand and appreciate my utter disgust over what Microsoft and Copilot did by blatantly scraping open source software's codebases without even so much as any attempt at attribution or respecting the licenes of many (if not all?) open source projects.

No on gitlab. If its self hosted gitea is best in class.
I can see hosting a mirror on github if only for the redundancy/visibility. Some projects will host but then direct contributions on their self host. Like Go does.
I would suggest using a vanity domain that can redirect tools like go get to hosting of choice. And not require rewriting all the packages any time it gets moved.

That being said however, @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com makes a very good and valid argument for putting Yarn.social’s codebases, repositories and issues back on Github for reasons that make me “torn” over my own sense of morality and ethics.
But I can live with this as long as I continue to run and operate my new (yet to be off the ground) company “Self Hosted Pty Ltd” and where it operates it’s own code hosting, servicesa, tools, etc.

Assuming the DNS is playing ball now, my little personal site https://www.andrewjvpowell.com/ is now self hosted and solar powered. As @mckinley@twtxt.net can attest, running on the original nearlyfreespeech.net non-production plan could use as little as $0.01 per day so there’s not really any advantage to this, its just… because I can 🙃
Signal is experiencing technical difficulties. We are working hard to restore service as quickly as possible.
One thing I’d like to have one day (and it would be nice if it were integrated into twtxt.net and other pods with a familiar and pleasant user experience on Desktop, Web and Mobile) is an e2e encrypted messaging that is self-hosted and federated that doesn’t suck operationally (so many complicated solutions that exist that are hard to setup even for a Senior DevOps/SRE)
@prologic@twtxt.net Web Key Directory: a way to self host your public key. instead of using a central system like pgp.mit.net or OpenPGP.org you have your key on a server you own.
it takes an email@address.com hashes the part before the @ and turns it into [openpgpkey.]address.com/.well-known/openpgpkey[/address.com]/<hash>

OpenPGP has a part of the self signature reserved for notatinal data. which is basically a bunch of key/values.
this site tries to emulate the identity proofs of keybase but in a more decentralized/federation way.
my next steps are to have this project host WKD keys which is kinda like a self hosting of your pgp key that are also discoverable with http requests.
then to add a new notation for following other keys. where you can do a kind of web of trust.
