These are the things that are open right now or that I could think of. Most other stuff I actually do in the terminal.

In the past™, I used the Python KDE4 bindings. That was really nice. I could pass most stuff directly in the constructor and didn’t have to call gazillions of setters improving the experience significantly. If I ever wanted to do GUI programming again, I’d definitely go that route. There are also great Qt bindings for Python if one wanted to avoid the KDE stuff on top. The vast majority I do for myself, though, is either CLI or maybe TUI. A few web shit things, but no GUIs anymore. :-)

This very knight inspired me to make myself a knight helmet with opening visor out of an old washing machine sheet metal years ago for a theater play. It was really great fun, both making the helmet as well as using it during the week in the play as a silly and shady prince who got all his tracts of land by winning dubious games.

I just couldn’t really hear very well in it. And if somebody hit me on the head or just slightly knocked on the helmet, it was incredibly loud. No fine craftmanship by any means and obviously historically extremely questionable at best, but it did the job well enough. One of the running gags was that I had to open the visor when I wanted to talk. Here are some photos in action, you’ll find many more when surfing through the gallery:

We just added a few dots of paint on one of the two dice, so that it had two fours, two fives and two sixes or something like that. I always told my opponents: “You can choose whatever dice you want. Except for the red one, that’s my lucky dice!” As well-behaved children, they then selected the blue, unbiased one. And usually lost. However, I remember there was one kid that beat me with four sixes in row. :-D Although we thought, we make it halfway obvious that this game is truly not fair, it took them extremely long to figure out that we had messed with my lucky dice. When they finally did, they got super angry. Some of them were on the brink of beating me up. That was really nice to see their sense of justice kick it. :-)

Wanted to share that we’re so proud of our six year old son; after taking skating lessons himself, he taught me and my wife how to stop on skates today. He was so proud about that he could teach us something good. Enjoyed also playing table tennis with him in the park, even-though it got windy, we had fun and didn’t give up trying to have a decent game. And at the guided tour at the old hot-metal plant in Duisburg yesterday, he asked the best questions and could be the guide’s assistant - holding the flashlight.

I built a gaming PC back in 2020, and in 2024 the only resource-intensive task I perform with it is generating strong private keys for my nodes on the Yggdrasil network. Money well-spent!

@movq@www.uninformativ.de i’ve wondered the same thing.. dansup can be pretty erratic and i don’t really trust the guy. thankfully (at least from my perspective) he’s not the only game in town. though i think going UI-first is kind of jumping the gun. the fediverse doesn’t really have the infrastructure in place to support video publishing at the scale that a tiktok user might expect. based on some of dansups statements regarding palestine, i’m sure its partially an effort to control what kind of content makes it into fedi’s tiktok streams for the first while.

@prologic@twtxt.net Wikipedia claims sha1 is vulnerable to a “chosen-prefix attack”, which I gather means I can write any two twts I like, and then cause them to have the exact same sha1 hash by appending something. I guess a twt ending in random junk might look suspcious, but perhaps the junk could be worked into an image URL like . If that’s not possible now maybe it will be later.

git only uses sha1 because they’re stuck with it: migrating is very hard. There was an effort to move git to sha256 but I don’t know its status. I think there is progress being made with Game Of Trees, a git clone that uses the same on-disk format.

I can’t imagine any benefit to using sha1, except that maybe some very old software might support sha1 but not sha256.

QUIC is expected to be a game-changer in improving web application performance. In this paper, we conduct a systematic examination of QUIC’s performance over high-speed networks. We find that over fast Internet, the UDP+QUIC+HTTP/3 stack suffers a data rate reduction of up to 45.2% compared to the TCP+TLS+HTTP/2 counterpart. Moreover, the performance gap between QUIC and HTTP/2 grows as the underlying bandwidth increases. We observe this issue on lightweight data transfer clients and major web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera), on different hosts (desktop, mobile), and over diverse networks (wired broadband, cellular). It affects not only file transfers, but also various applications such as video streaming (up to 9.8% video bitrate reduction) and web browsing. Through rigorous packet trace analysis and kernel- and user-space profiling, we identify the root cause to be high receiver-side processing overhead, in particular, excessive data packets and QUIC’s user-space ACKs. We make concrete recommendations for mitigating the observed performance issues.

If some of you budding fathers want to know how I created a computer nerd to one day work for Facebook in the big USA, well you purchase a $1000 Xmas present, an enormous thick book with C++ programming, and say, you can play as many games as you like kids, but James has to create them using computer software.

SO James created once a 3D chess program with sound, took 6 months or so, really hard to beat, not based on logic moves point by point like other chess programs, this one was based on the depth of looking for patterns, set it to 5 moves ahead and you were toast every time. Nice program too, sadly gone over the years, computers suffer from bit rot. We used to try and mark rotten hard drive discs once as bad sectors, not sure how UBuntu does this these days, I see a dozen errors on the screen every time I load.

Today I would purchase for my kids AI CAD simulation software with metal 3D printer and get your child to build fancy 3D models and engines from scratch. This will make them an expert in the CAD AI industry by the time they are 14 years old. Sadly AI is here to stay and will spoil the Internet.

@quark@ferengi.one pascal was high school for me 10th grade. I remember making an over the top Yahtzee game with text windows and everything. My instructor got mad at me because it was a ton of pages printed out to review.

I finished my data structures classes with C++ and the next year they changed it out with Java. When i transferred up after my assoc degree it was C++ using the counter-strike source game engine.

The local energy Company is doing an Advent contest with a word guessing game, 21 letters long, it starts with a T and I got all other letters by looking at the source of their site… Put all of the letters into ChatGPT 3.5, but it is having real trouble coming up with something plausible.
