What was also extremely surprising to me: I’m heavily afraid of heights, but looking down this giant hole wasn’t a problem at all. Not a single bit. Neither with the light turned off nor on. I really don’t understand it. I should have absolutely shitted my pants. The only thing was that I was really, really holding onto my camera because I was afraid that I accidentally drop it into the well. But other than that, absolutely nothing. Very weird. But I take it.

The well sounds really cool, but I’ve always been a physics geek (ex: putting coins down those spinny funnels they used to have in the malls for collecting donations). I would have probably spent hours just there!

It’s partly inspired by Twtxt/Yarn.social and Salty.im – in at least the way teh DNS discovery and WKID works. Once your instance is up and running and you’ve gone through the /setup and created yourself an account (or seti it up with an appropraite ODIC IDP) try something like /msg james@mills.io Hey! at which point you should automatically start peering with my instance. You should then be able to /join #lobby1 (a globally federated channel already across 2 instances so far). 🤞

Obviously wouldn’t buy it, or any other foldable device, with these fragile plastic displays, lack of a headphone jack and thanks to iOS also too many software compromises.

Since earlier this year, I main a TCL phone, I got during a sale event, for under $150 and it really has pretty alright specs: 8GB RAM, recently updated to Android 16, 90Hz refresh rate, even the headphone jack, …

But at the same time, I’ll probably stick with Apple regardless, even if I hate their exorbitant prices, and just buy their low-end stuff 🤦‍♂️ It is fucking crazy when you consider what these things are actually made for over in China or wherever they’re manufactured.

I’m building a spec, clients can implement the spec, or you can ya know, just curl and git your way through. @fossham@twtpub.com I honestly think the most unique and interesting thing about doing this at all is that it is in fact inspired directly by Twtxt / Yarn.social itself – That is to say, I am confident I can do this in such a way as to be “truly decentralised”, no inter-networking like ActivityPub, no centraised forges like Github or Codeberg. You run your instance, I run mine, we just are able to collaborate. Think exchanging patches over Email, just without all the hard-to-learn ways to do that (enough though it’s not hard for some of us, but still).

You fork my repo in the app, it clones it to your own forge, follows my instance and it’s repo for updates and ping my instance to indicate “you’ve forked me”. Then when you publish changes, I can see them by pulling your instance’s feed. It all works on the same plain text principles of Tstxt itself. The feeds are “pull”-based with push-based “pings” on things like “someone forked your repo”, “a new issue has been raised against your repo”, etc.

I’m not really sure what you have in mind. All I can safe with relatively big confidence is that users hate having to make another account. That’s why GitHub/Codeberg are so successful: One account gives you access to millions of projects.

So, once that problem is solved, anything else will probably just fall into place … ? 😅
