In-reply-to » My current PC is from 2013, so I never even bothered to check, but as it turns out: My motherboard still has a serial port. 🤯 I thought these had long died out by then. To be honest, I didn’t have the need for one, either, not until recently … So I completely lost track if PCs have these things or not.

@prologic@twtxt.net Ah, shit, you might be right. You can even buy these slot plates on Amazon. I didn’t even think to check Amazon, I went straight to eBay and tried to find it there, because I thought ā€œit’s so old, nobody is going to use that anymore, I need to buy second-handā€. 🤦🤦🤦

It really shows that I built my last PC so long ago … I know next to nothing about current hardware. 😢

In-reply-to » Sooooooooo, things happened, and I now have a dot matrix printer again. šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

@prologic@twtxt.net Yeah, those POS thingies are similar. There’s ā€œESC/POSā€ as a variant of ā€œESC/Pā€, if I’m not mistaken.

All I can say is, when I go to big stores like Amazon, then I have trouble finding ā€œtraditionalā€ dot matrix printers for use at home. šŸ˜… Epson still sells them, but they’re more expensive than my laser printer was. So yeah, they still exist, just expensive, by the looks of it.

Since Fastly acquired and recently shut down glitch.com, some of my ancient webapps are no longer available, nor do I have any plans to make them available again - all had either zero, or very few monthly visits, used outdated libraries and would be a waste of money, to continue hosting and updating elsewhere.

All art archives remain unaffected and all projects shut down before 2025, were already permanently deleted, but if there’s someone out there, still relying on the recently discontinued projects, somehow - you can reach out and request their source code.

These requests will only be honoured, until the end of this year, when we plan to permanently delete, all of this data (both webapps and files only hosted on Amazons CDN).

In-reply-to » I have just received the royalties for the last book: 98 euros for the four-month period, about 24 euros a month on average. Not even enough for the gym membership. If you have to keep some knowledge: don't write for money, the paper (or ebook) industry is in a very bad way, the margins for the author are very small and piracy is devastating.

@prologic@twtxt.net Fully agreed. I’m far more likely to buy such mediums when DRM-free. I never go near Amazon eBooks etc because of their lock-in, and I have a Kobo eReader which needs to have the books side loaded unless directly from the Kobo store. I prefer DRM-free files every time.

In-reply-to » Today I found that Solarpunk is a thing: https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Solarpunk

@abucci@anthony.buc.ci Its not better than a Cat5e. I have had two versions of the device. The old ones were only 200Mbps i didn’t have the MAC issue but its like using an old 10baseT. The newer model can support 1Gbps on each port for a total bandwidth of 2Gbps.. i typically would see 400-500Mbps from my Wifi6 router. I am not sure if it was some type of internal timeout or being confused by switching between different wifi access points and seeing the mac on different sides.

Right now I have my wifi connected directly with a cat6e this gets me just under my providers 1.3G downlink. the only thing faster is plugging in directly.

MoCA is a good option, they have 2.5G models in the same price range as the 1G Powerline models BUT, only if you have the coax in wall already.. which puts you in the same spot if you don’t. You are for sure going to have an outlet in every room of the house by code.
