@prologic@twtxt.net to clarify the i meant the ability to parse feeds using unix command line utilities, as a prinicpal of twtxtv1’s design. im not sure how feasible it is to build a simple feed reader out of common scripting utilities when hashing is in play, and;

i concede, it does make a lot of sense to fix up the hashing spec rather than completely supplant it at this point, just thinking about what the rewrite would be like is dreadful in and of itself x.x

Whooooaaaah, I just accidentally found out that VLC can play 360° videos and I am able to pan around! Crazy shit. I actually scrolled in order to adjust the volume like it usually works, but it zoomed in and out instead. Then I saw the title hinting at the 360° stuff. Even though this is not my cup of tea, it’s nice that VLC supports it.

@zvava@twtxt.net oh?! I shall play more ā€œseriouslyā€ with it soon then. Yay!

Been playing on sdf.org the past couple days. It’s like wandering through a commune made of unix. If you’re a cli sort and on gemini, check it out. It feels very ā€˜smolweb’ even though its more than that.

I have a feeling that learning to play electric double bass through an amplifier was a big mistake.

At the core, this is an acoustic instrument. If you play it through an amp, you will instinctively only do the bare minimum to get some sound going, because the amp does the heavy lifting. But it’s just not right.

This is a very physical instrument. It needs a lot of force and strength – in comparison, an electric bass guitar is almost flimsy and delicate. I need to ā€œfeelā€ what’s going on and that’s just not the case when using headphones.

I feel like I wasted ~3 years. 🫤 But maybe it’ll get better from now on …

In-reply-to » i went to a rilo kiley concert the other day and it was so special to me... i teared up at some of the songs but when "a better son/daughter" came on, i full on cried. what an amazing experience.

@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz Uuhh, a rooftop concert! That sounds sick. I first learned about this in Electric Callboy’s tour report. They played the same location last year.

Heck yeah, you managed to be in the front rows. :-) I never heard about Rilo Kiley before, but the two songs I just listened to are good. Something to relax to.

In-reply-to » It might just be my client, but it seems that I cannot track multiple URLs at once. As such, all three of my twtxt URLs will work for following, but mentions will only reach me at my HTTPS URL (https://hashnix.club/~dce/twtxt.txt). If there is a client that can cope with twtxt mirrors, I would love to know about it.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de Yeah, we’ve seen how this plays out in practice 🤣 @dce@hashnix.club My advice, do what @movq@www.uninformativ.de has hinted at and don’t change the 1st # url = field in your feed. I’m not sure if you had already, but the first url field is kind of important in your feed as it is used as the ā€œHashing URIā€ for threading.

In-reply-to » @prologic @moveq I think it's mostly the serious lack of competition. All the Android phone manufacturers just use the Google version of Android, bundle in piles of Google bloatware and do whatever Google tells them to. If some of them installed Lineage, or any other versions, with their own stores and rules, or even just offer a less Googly version of their phones, as an option, for more experienced users, Google wouldn't be able, to push everyone around.

@bender@twtxt.net have you seen how many Google apps, get shoved into the new releases of Android. MicroG, Google Play, maybe Chrome is fine, but everything else, I can’t get rid of, is just bloatware to me.

In-reply-to » RIP Android:

To combat malware and financial scams, Google announced today that only apps from developers that have undergone verification can be installed on certified Android devices starting in 2026.

This requirement applies to ā€œcertified Android devicesā€ that have Play Protect and are preloaded with Google apps. The Play Store implemented similar requirements in 2023, but Google is now mandating this for all install methods, including third-party app stores and sideloading where you download an APK file from a third-party source.

Distrobox is pretty handy and kind of amazed I haven’t played with it before now. I wanted to quickly try out Proton’s Authenticator they just released, but they only had binaries for Ubuntu and Fedora (naturally), but I’m on Void Linux on this laptop.

Installed the latest basic Fedora image with Distrobox, used dnf to install the downloaded rpm file within it, and presto, running the app within Void like I’d just downloaded it though the normal repos.

In-reply-to » A good blog post that makes some good points: Can I ethically use LLMs?

@eldersnake@we.loveprivacy.club Yeah for sure! The thing that annoys me about a lot of this, is the sheer fact you can’t really self-host let alone self-train these things I’ve been playing around with AI at home over the past few months and building my own neural networks from scratch (in Go) with genetic algorithms on a few tasks and training sets, but man it’s hardā„¢ 🤣 I feel like we’re doing something wrong here…

I bought the ā€œremasteredā€ versions of Grim Fandango and Forsaken on GOG, because they’re super cheap at the moment. Both have native Linux versions.

And both these Linux version crap their pants. 🫤 The bundled SDL2 of Forsaken says it ā€œcan’t find a matching GLX visualā€ and I couldn’t figure out how to fix that. I didn’t spend a lot of time on Grim Fandango.

Both work great in Wine. 🤦

(I do have the original version of Grim Fandango from the 1990ies, but that one does not work so well in Wine. I figured, if it’s so cheap, why not. And I now get to play the english version. 😃 The german dub is pretty damn good, actually, but I always prefer the original these days.)

It took about a year, I think, but I’ve now finished another run of Tomb Raider I, II, and III. And I have, for the first time, played the two bonus packs ā€œUnfinished Businessā€ (for TR I) and ā€œGolden Maskā€ (for TR II). They’re available as a free download, if you have the original games. (The bonus pack for TR III is not free.)

I just love these games – and the game mechanics. It’s just the right balance between challenging and relaxing.

The thing about upright bass is that you must play it on a regular basis. At least several times a week, ideally daily. It requires quite a bit of strength and it’s very easy to lose those muscles again – at least I don’t use them that much otherwise. 🤣 I’ve been through several cycles of ā€œgain strength → lose strength → goto 0ā€ now …

In-reply-to » @andros Thanks for consolidating a lot of good ideas. Especially how you have deiced to just extend the mention syntax for location-based treads. This might even be backward compatible with older (pre-yarn) clients. What about using Z for UTC +00:00- is that allowed in your specs? Regarding url = I would suggest to only allow one and the maybe add url_old = or url_alt = !? I'm still not a fan of a DM feature, even thou it helps that i have now been split out into a separate feed file. Instead if would suggest a contact = field for where people can put an email or other id/link for an established chat protocol like signal or matrix.

Why are we testing, or playing with, an alternate non-fully-compatible feed format within the same feed that we use daily?

In-reply-to » I went on a small hike, just 12-13km this time. The weather was great, blue sky, sunny 18°C, but with the wind it felt colder. Leaves and other green stuff is exploding like crazy. It looks super beautiful right now.

@prologic@twtxt.net Exactly, @bender@twtxt.net! :-D This is at the entrance of a veggie farm (11 & 12) where there are free-ranging kids playing on the road, so people should slow down when driving there to buy some supplies. I also wondered why the sign says ā€œHalt!ā€ instead of ā€œLangsam fahren!ā€ (Drive slowly!) or something like that. On second thought, maybe to actually park there on the street right at the property line.

I actually never walked on that road before and discovered that this was a dead end. There’s usually at the very least a foot path on which to continue when passing a farm. Not this time, though. I didn’t want to stamp down the high grass to cut across country, so I had to walk back maybe 150 meters. Not too bad.

In-reply-to » @andros maybe create a separate, completely distinct feed for DM? That way, clients do not need to do anything, only those wanted to "talk in private" follow themselves, using their very special dm-only.txt feeds. šŸ˜‚

After reading you, @eapl.me@eapl.me, I’ll tell you my point of view.
In my opinion, a feed does not have to be equivalent to a timeline. A timeline is a representation of the feed adapted to a user. You may not be interested in seeing other people’s threads or DMs. But perhaps they are interested in seeing mentions or DMs directed at them. It is important not to fall into the trap. With that clarification…
I insist, this is my point of view, it is not an absolute truth: I don’t think extensions should be respectful of customers who are no longer maintained.
We cannot have a system that is simple, backwards compatible and extensible all at the same time. We have to give up some of the 3 points. I would not like to give up simplicity because it will then make it harder to maintain the customers who do stay. Therefore, I think it is better to give up backwards compatibility and play with new formulas in the extensions. I don’t think it’s a good idea to make a hash keep so much load: a hashtag, a thread and also a DM.
