The thing about upright bass is that you must play it on a regular basis. At least several times a week, ideally daily. I also wondered why the sign says “Halt!” instead of “Langsam fahren!” (Drive slowly!) or something like that. On second thought, maybe to actually park there on the street right at the property line.

I actually never walked on that road before and discovered that this was a dead end. There’s usually at the very least a foot path on which to continue when passing a farm. Not this time, though. I didn’t want to stamp down the high grass to cut across country, so I had to walk back maybe 150 meters. Not too bad.

In my opinion, a feed does not have to be equivalent to a timeline. A timeline is a representation of the feed adapted to a user. You may not be interested in seeing other people’s threads or DMs. But perhaps they are interested in seeing mentions or DMs directed at them. It is important not to fall into the trap. With that clarification…
I insist, this is my point of view, it is not an absolute truth: I don’t think extensions should be respectful of customers who are no longer maintained.
We cannot have a system that is simple, backwards compatible and extensible all at the same time. We have to give up some of the 3 points. I would not like to give up simplicity because it will then make it harder to maintain the customers who do stay. Therefore, I think it is better to give up backwards compatibility and play with new formulas in the extensions. I don’t think it’s a good idea to make a hash keep so much load: a hashtag, a thread and also a DM.

I’m playing with ratterplatter again: It’s a toy that watches disk I/O and emulates the noise of a real hard disk. (Linux only.) It uses sound samples from one of my older disks.

I tried a different approach at estimating the disk activity and I think I finally got it right (after almost 10 years … 🤦).

The results aren’t too bad, but this thing can’t be super accurate due to the huge I/O caches that we have these days. For the video, I dropped the caches before booting Windows, otherwise you would have heard almost nothing.

“original.jpg” being the filename of the input file and “resized.jpg” the filename of the output. You can play around with the width, “300x” means 300 pixels wide and the height is determined automatically to still remain in the same ratio. The quality is how much to compress it. The closer to 0 the value gets, the worse the result, but also smaller in file size. More towards 100 and the quality improves together with a larger file size.

You have to install the package “imagemagick” for this to work, I believe.

Yesterday I was doing a lot of research on how #hyperdrive and the #holepunch project work. Would it be possible to use it to make #twtxt an easier gateway for new users? Could we stop using web servers?
My conclusion: We would end up being a #nostr. On the one hand it would become more complex to use, it would force the user to have software installed, and on the other hand the community would need a central proxy to make the routes accessible via HTTP. In other words, it’s not a good idea.
However, it’s an AMAZING technology. I want to start playing with it.

This very knight inspired me to make myself a knight helmet with opening visor out of an old washing machine sheet metal years ago for a theater play. It was really great fun, both making the helmet as well as using it during the week in the play as a silly and shady prince who got all his tracts of land by winning dubious games.

I just couldn’t really hear very well in it. And if somebody hit me on the head or just slightly knocked on the helmet, it was incredibly loud. No fine craftmanship by any means and obviously historically extremely questionable at best, but it did the job well enough. One of the running gags was that I had to open the visor when I wanted to talk. Here are some photos in action, you’ll find many more when surfing through the gallery:

We just added a few dots of paint on one of the two dice, so that it had two fours, two fives and two sixes or something like that. I always told my opponents: “You can choose whatever dice you want. Except for the red one, that’s my lucky dice!” As well-behaved children, they then selected the blue, unbiased one. And usually lost. However, I remember there was one kid that beat me with four sixes in row. :-D Although we thought, we make it halfway obvious that this game is truly not fair, it took them extremely long to figure out that we had messed with my lucky dice. When they finally did, they got super angry. Some of them were on the brink of beating me up. That was really nice to see their sense of justice kick it. :-)

i recorded my first camcorder video!!!! it’s just me practicing guitar after sooo long of not playing it. my acoustic, to be specific (well, it’s an electric acoustic thing but i can play it without plugging it in lol, i do have a stratocaster though). it’s capped at ~30 minutes because i used one mini DVD for it and decided i wasn’t gonna use another one to extend the run time. so yeah. it was super fun! i hope i can share it soon, i’m ripping the disc with make MKV right now, then i’ll re-encode to a web friendly format, and upload to my site and hope that works well
