@bender@twtxt.net My choices might be a bit limited, at least going by this list: https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box (That would be some incredibly cheap storage.) Iāll probably have to order such a box and then play with it a little bit to see whatās possible.
Sometimes, we spend months stuck in inertia, distracted by screens and routine. So Iād like to give you a simple reminder: creating-in whatever form-is what makes you feel alive.
The beauty of working on projects is not in their āsuccessā, but in the simple act of working on them. Whether itās writing, cooking, programming or redecorating the house: play with ideas without pressure, engage in an activity to test, fail and discover without judgement.
In the end, what remains is not a perfect product, but the satisfaction of completion and valuable lessons.
Find a project, no matter how small, and let it take you without expectations.

Hi, So i made a little MVP registry crawler tool for twtxt. It now has a basic UI to play with. It has a somewhat full history back to about 2018-ish. Plus some interesting bits that were timestamped to earlier.
Find it here: https://watcher.sour.is
Code base is found here: https://git.sour.is/sour-is/xt
Iām playing with ratterplatter again: Itās a toy that watches disk I/O and emulates the noise of a real hard disk. (Linux only.) It uses sound samples from one of my older disks.
I tried a different approach at estimating the disk activity and I think I finally got it right (after almost 10 years ⦠š¤¦).
Demo, booting a Windows 2000 VM: https://movq.de/v/1400544cc6/2kboot-ratterplatter-2.mp4
(For this purpose alone, I put a couple of mini speakers into my PC case, so that the noise comes from the right place: https://movq.de/v/a3b2dc0932/speakers.jpg)
The results arenāt too bad, but this thing canāt be super accurate due to the huge I/O caches that we have these days. For the video, I dropped the caches before booting Windows, otherwise you would have heard almost nothing.
FWIW, if you donāt know it yet, this is the equivalent for proper keyboard sound: https://github.com/zevv/bucklespring
Hi! Iām 759da and I do not bite. I just want to play!
(The original was played on a guitar with an octave pedal, not a bass.)
@movq@www.uninformativ.de Hahaha, that filename! :-D 100 times better than I could ever play.

Playing multimedia with Dillo
What if you want to use a web browser like Dillo, which lacks JavaScript support and canāt play audio or video inside the browser? Dillo doesnāt have the capability to play audio or video directly from the browser, however it can easily offload this task to other programs. This page collects some examples of how to do watch videos and listen to audio tracks or podcasts by using an external player program. In particular we will cover mpv with yt-dlp which supports YouTube ⦠ā Read more
ReactOS 0.4.15 released
Itās been over three years since the last ReactOS release, but today, in honour of the first commit to the project by the oldest, still active contributor, the project released ReactOS 0.4.15. Of course, thereās been a steady stream of nightly releases, so itās not like the project stalled or anything, but having a proper release is always nice to have. We are pleased to announce the release of ReactOS 0.4.15! This release offers Plug and Play fixes, audio fixes, memory management fi ⦠ā Read more

Help me to play with it a bit and report any vulnerability or bug. Also any idea is welcome.
@osnews@feeds.twtxt.net Its been so long and never really thought about it.
- Arch was great but always had issues.
- Gentoo was great but not enough patience to compile when I need something quick for work.
I havenāt really looked back since I installed Void. Sometimes it is a pain when things donāt play well with MUSL but nothing that would make me change course.
@andros@twtxt.andros.dev Sweet! canāt wait to play with that. Good luck!
@off_grid_living@twtxt.net No right click thing, but in the terminal:
convert -strip -quality 70 -resize 300x original.jpg resized.jpg
āoriginal.jpgā being the filename of the input file and āresized.jpgā the filename of the output. You can play around with the width, ā300xā means 300 pixels wide and the height is determined automatically to still remain in the same ratio. The quality is how much to compress it. The closer to 0 the value gets, the worse the result, but also smaller in file size. More towards 100 and the quality improves together with a larger file size.
You have to install the package āimagemagickā for this to work, I believe.
Yesterday I was doing a lot of research on how #hyperdrive and the #holepunch project work. Would it be possible to use it to make #twtxt an easier gateway for new users? Could we stop using web servers?
My conclusion: We would end up being a #nostr. On the one hand it would become more complex to use, it would force the user to have software installed, and on the other hand the community would need a central proxy to make the routes accessible via HTTP. In other words, itās not a good idea.
However, itās an AMAZING technology. I want to start playing with it.
@movq@www.uninformativ.de @prologic@twtxt.net @bmallred@staystrong.run @andros@twtxt.andros.dev Thank you all! I donāt have emacs installed, so Iāll try lagrange and see. According to my shell history, I must have played around with amfora ages ago.
Reviving a dead audio format: the return of ZZM
Long-time readers will know that my first video game love was the text-mode video game slash creation studio ZZT. One feature of this game is the ability to play simple music through the PC speaker, and back in the day, I remember that the format āZZMā existed, so you could enjoy the square wave tunes outside of the games. But imagine my surprise in 2025 to find that, while the Museum of ZZT does have a ZZM Audio section, it recommends t ⦠ā Read more
The invalid 68030 instruction that accidentally allowed the Mac Classic II to successfully boot up
A bug in the ROM for the Macintosh II was recently discovered that causes a crash when booting in 32-bit mode. Doug Brown discovered and documented the bug while playing with the MAME debugger. Why did it never show up before? It seems a quirk in Motorolaās 68030 CPU inadvertently fixes it when executing an illegal instruction that shou ⦠ā Read more

Yeah, @bender@twtxt.net, I absolutely love it! :-D Monty Python just rocks!
This very knight inspired me to make myself a knight helmet with opening visor out of an old washing machine sheet metal years ago for a theater play. It was really great fun, both making the helmet as well as using it during the week in the play as a silly and shady prince who got all his tracts of land by winning dubious games.
I just couldnāt really hear very well in it. And if somebody hit me on the head or just slightly knocked on the helmet, it was incredibly loud. No fine craftmanship by any means and obviously historically extremely questionable at best, but it did the job well enough. One of the running gags was that I had to open the visor when I wanted to talk. Here are some photos in action, youāll find many more when surfing through the gallery:

- https://wawuwo.de/2016/woche2/freitag/036.html#image In one lunch break my page and I decided to dress up and play a game of dice against the kids. However, we used badly cogged dice. We just added a few dots of paint on one of the two dice, so that it had two fours, two fives and two sixes or something like that. I always told my opponents: āYou can choose whatever dice you want. Except for the red one, thatās my lucky dice!ā As well-behaved children, they then selected the blue, unbiased one. And usually lost. However, I remember there was one kid that beat me with four sixes in row. :-D Although we thought, we make it halfway obvious that this game is truly not fair, it took them extremely long to figure out that we had messed with my lucky dice. When they finally did, they got super angry. Some of them were on the brink of beating me up. That was really nice to see their sense of justice kick it. :-)

Religious Leaders Experiment With AI In Sermons
An anonymous reader quotes a report from the New York Times: To members of his synagogue, the voice that played over the speakers of Congregation Emanu El in Houston sounded just like Rabbi Josh Fixlerās. In the same steady rhythm his congregation had grown used to, the voice delivered a sermon about what it meant to be a neighbor in the age of artificial intelligence. Then, Rabbi Fix ⦠ā Read more
