We don’t have meaningful social connections anymore like our parents or their parents geeration had. We are so scattered, that I am unsure how many of my friends are actually friends and how many are just professional contacts. Everytime I switch job, almost 70% of my friends suddenly fall out of contact. Heck, I don’t even know the people who live in next apartments both left, right, up and down on the same building. Socializing with my friends mean, setting up an appointment weeks ahead to see if we can align on a free-slot and this often involves all of us commuting to somewhere and disbanding by 22:00 hours because family, work next morning, chores to do, doctor appointment and other human things. The young man, who does not know the future, sees life as a kind of epic adventure, an Odyssey through strange seas and unknown islands, where he will test and prove his powers, and thereby discover his immortality. The man of middle years, who has lived the future that he once dreamed, sees life as a tragedy; for he has learned that his power, however great, will not prevail against those forces of accident and nature to which he gives the names of gods, and has learned that he is mortal. But the man of age, if he plays his assigned role properly, must see life as a comedy. For his triumphs and his failures merge, and one is no more the occasion for pride or shame than the other; and he is neither the hero who proves himself against those forces, nor the protagonist who is destroyed by them. – John Williams in Augustus I thought I’d have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35 (2020) | Hacker News

I’ve always found that “living at my means” has paid dividends. To many folks, ‘round these parts, they’d consider it “living below my means,” but that’s mostly because they “live beyond their means.” Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times? | Hacker News

🤔 👋 Reconsidering moving Yarn.social’s development back to Github: Speaking of which (I do not forget); @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com and I were discussing over a video call two nights ago, as well as @lyse@lyse.isobeef.org who joined a bit later, about the the whole moved of all of my projects and their source code off of Github. Whilst some folks do understand and appreciate my utter disgust over what Microsoft and Copilot did by blatantly scraping open source software’s codebases without even so much as any attempt at attribution or respecting the licenes of many (if not all?) open source projects.

That being said however, @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com makes a very good and valid argument for putting Yarn.social’s codebases, repositories and issues back on Github for reasons that make me “torn” over my own sense of morality and ethics.

But I can live with this as long as I continue to run and operate my new (yet to be off the ground) company “Self Hosted Pty Ltd” and where it operates it’s own code hosting, servicesa, tools, etc.

Plese comment here on your thoughts. Let us decide togetehr 🤗

In-reply-to » @lyse LOL. Some days I feel like Forrest Gump, wanting to mow just for fun. Others is a chore. The other are way more frequent than the some. LOL.

Not anymore 😭. I still have a self-propelled one, and electric, which is very nice. But when you live under an almost constant 32-35℃, with super high humidity, you cease liking working outside pretty quick.

The features that macOS Monterey will bring, albeit minor, will made for a better “quality of living”. I am looking forward to Notes, and the iCloud+ integration (Private Relay, Hide My Email). It also bring macOS cohesively close to iOS. My work 2015 iMac and M1 Mini will get it, so looking forward to it!

@adi@f.adi.onl Oh boy… we don’t want to go down that route. There is plenty to know about the Taliban, not just from the news but from people who lived—and still lives—under their “governance”; all of which is, I am afraid, much more accurate than your highschool girlfriend story telling.

“The target of the Jihad was a machine-attitude as much as the machines,” Leto said. “Humans had set those machines to usurp our sense of beauty, our necessary selfdom out of which we make living judgments. Naturally, the machines were destroyed.”

I like how it’s a widely acknowledged fact that we live in a country where you can get extrajudicially imprisoned in black sites or executed by a secret police (the CIA/FBI) and people just accept this and make jokes about it

This Memorial Day Weekend remember the lives lost, the genocides waged, and the destruction of land the United States of America and Canada have caused in the name of European expansion, imperialism and colonization. The precious military you pretend to care for is the reason for the deaths and genocides of native people. The destruction of language in the name of racism, and the silent murder of so many native people, and the theft of land that the native people lived on. European settlers are the cause of the destruction of the climate, without the industrial revolution the Americas might have been saved to exist away from the destruction Europeans loved causing in the name of greed and wealth and power. Were the natives perfect? Doesn’t fucking matter, it’s their land regardless. This weekend, let me remind you that Canada, and the United States of America should be dissolved, and the land returned to the rightful people; namely the native and indigenous people and Mexico. That’s right Texas, y’all pussies are on stolen Mexican land so how about you get off THEIR LAND. Everything has come full circle, and there’s no stopping the world from continuing to find the literal skeletons in the closets of the United States, Canada, Britain, and France.

Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking, just as the man who spends too much time in the theater is tempted to be content with living vicariously instead of living his own life.
