i started a little thing on my dreamwidth and called it a flash prompt box. basically it’s a limited time thing where people can prompt me for stuff i’m offering, like short fanfiction, photoshop-edited user icons, music recs, and a bit more! i’m having sooo much fun with it so far it’s been a blast just making stuff for friends :)
also more friends are making their own posts with the same concept which is SO cool to see
I do not agree with every decision the Internet Archive makes, but I consider it a very important tool, for Internet archival and preservation - to the point, it even influenced what licence I chose, for my media and websites.
Sadly they’re now facing another threat, in the form of litigious music labels, that they’re now trying to convince to stop, by collecting signatures here.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de Yeah, most of the graphical applications are actually KDE programs:
- KMail – e-mail client
- Okular – PDF viewer
- Gwenview – image viewer
- Dolphin – file browser
- KWallet – password manager (I want to check out
pass
one day. The most annoying thing is that when I copy a password, it says that the password has been modified and asks me whether I want to save the changes. I never do, because the password is still the same. I don’t get it.)
- KPatience – card game
- Kdenlive – video editor
- Kleopatra – certificate manager
Qt:
- VLC – video player
- Psi – Jabber client (I happily used Kopete in the past, but that is not supported anymore or so. I don’t remember.)
- sqlitebrowser – SQLite browser
Gtk:
- Firefox – web browser
- Quod Libet – music player (I should look for a better alternative. Can’t remember why I had to move away from Amarok, was it dead? There was a fork Clementine or so, but I had to drop that for some unknown reason, too.)
- Audacity – audio editor
- GIMP – image editor
These are the things that are open right now or that I could think of. Most other stuff I actually do in the terminal.
In the past™, I used the Python KDE4 bindings. That was really nice. I could pass most stuff directly in the constructor and didn’t have to call gazillions of setters improving the experience significantly. If I ever wanted to do GUI programming again, I’d definitely go that route. There are also great Qt bindings for Python if one wanted to avoid the KDE stuff on top. The vast majority I do for myself, though, is either CLI or maybe TUI. A few web shit things, but no GUIs anymore. :-)
@prologic@twtxt.net Yeah and I don’t get why … There’s no copyrighted music in it, no ads (at least I don’t see any) … Just weird. 🥴
Well, that’s another bug: The search https://twtxt.net/search?q=%22LOOOOL%2C+great+programming+tutorial+music%22 yields the wrong hash. It should have been poyndha instead.
Reviving a dead audio format: the return of ZZM
Long-time readers will know that my first video game love was the text-mode video game slash creation studio ZZT. One feature of this game is the ability to play simple music through the PC speaker, and back in the day, I remember that the format “ZZM” existed, so you could enjoy the square wave tunes outside of the games. But imagine my surprise in 2025 to find that, while the Museum of ZZT does have a ZZM Audio section, it recommends t … ⌘ Read more
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz AKB48 and other spinoffs sound so great. I’m listening and whistling to them for hours now. I have no clue what the lyrics are about, but it’s just fantastic music. Thanks for introducing me to them. <3
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz Cool, cool, congrats! I skipped around and noticed that you used some great background music. Do you have a list for me to look up? :-) Also, that’s a nice desktop wallpaper in the end.
I’ve made it a habit to always put on my noise cancelling headphones when going to bed (without music). It’s pure heaven. 😂 Silence and darkness. I fall asleep within minutes. 😂 Good night. 😴
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz i also like the separation inherent with using dedicated devices. like i have a DAP, a fiio X1 ii from 2019, and it’s still going strong. it’s perfect for on the go music listening and i never have to worry about like going somewhere with no reception and the music drops out. it’s all local AND the battery lasts longer because i’m not using wi-fi or bluetooth or data. also i can directly access the file system and just add files anytime. this goes for my point & shoot and other devices too. i love this shit i’m such a nerd
@ionores@twtxt.net Opening the windows is the worst you can do with all that crazy smoke out there. But the music ain’t too bad. :-)
@movq@www.uninformativ.de Oh, a movqOS, that’s super cool! :-)
Yeah, glossy screens are straight from hell. :-D What’s this spooky wind chime background music?
Anyway, have great fun learning more and experimenting with this low level stuff!

good music and good beer..
This is how I play music. Find what I want on YT, download it to my dektop as an mp3 then I transfer it to a small mp3 player then I can plug that into a small speaker or a big one using a short audio lead
What? was? that? Music videos in the 90s was just something else. Especially like the guy in the straitjacket on a pogostick

The country music vamp n’ talk is a nice format. A stolen-from-the-blues-thing? I like the vibe of someone pouring out their heart into the mic in plain speech while their friends pour their hearts into their instruments gently in the background.
Still find it amazing how I can put almost my whole music collection on a device the size of a human finger nail.

I am playing some ambient music that begins with a sound that’s a bit like the drone of an airplane engine, and I spent a good minute or two adjusting the volume wondering why the music wasn’t playing because I thought it was a plane🤦♂

I’ve been lost in my DAW for a week now. Making music – especially something along the lines of Metal with actual instruments, not just synthesizers – is so hard. 😩 Makes you appreciate the work of all those artists out there a lot more.
