And no, it’s not pointless at all. I find this really interesting. The videos and photos are perfect for me. Even if I had the source code, I would not use that toolkit, as I’m not a fan of movable windows in TUIs. I want all my own programs to be fullscreen all the time. 8-) Having said that, it’s still an absolutely brilliant source of inspriation that will come in handy one day. So, keep posting. :-)

The targets are well spread across the forest, it’s impossible that they end up hitting others on accident. The only dangerous station is the one with the white swan. Since they shoot from the other side of the tad pole pond, they might actually hit people on the forest path (where I took the photo) when they miss the target and provided the shot is powerful enough. We were on our way before the archers started their loop trial.

I completely forgot, I saw my very first badger in the wild the day before yesterday. :-) That was absolutely cool! <3

I heard something comparatively large rustling in the bush right next to me and thought that it must be dear. Naturally, I stopped and tried to see what’s in there. The rustling went up the bank and it suddenly came down again towards the road I was on. That’s when I first layed eyes on it and identified it as a badger. For a split second I thought that it’s going to get after me and was ready to get running. But it just hadn’t noticed me yet. When it eventually spotted me, it froze for a few seconds and ran off uphill. My camera took too long to boot, so it was already gone by the time the photo machine was good to go.

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org I see him on those photos, and his singing starts ringing in my ears. I also thought, “I am going to miss him” because, you know, nothing is everlasting. But then I reproached myself; “enjoy the moment, dude, don’t taint it”. And so I shall.

@bender@twtxt.net Oh, this trekking bike is nothing special at all. It’s a Bulls Wildtail with only front suspension, 21 gears and standard V-brakes. The first immediate upgrade I did was mounting a pannier rack, it’s one of the most useful things.

I just quickly dug out this photo from one and a half years ago where it’s parked at our scout yard in November 2024. You just have to use your imagination on how the front looks like. :-D

The weathermen just cannot be right with their 20°C today, it must have been more. It was awfully hot, the light breeze was not enough and even absent most of the time. In the shade, it was alright. Other than that, the walk to the dairy farm and back was really beautiful. Very lovely scenery.

Somebody spilled their paintbox at sunset. Unfortunately, I missed to reinsert the SD card into my camera, so I could not take more photos of Azabache and his new mate. They quickly disappeared. He even landed right next to my window, so that would have been a killer shot.

¡Muchas gracias @bender@twtxt.net! I was also thinking about categorizing them a few years ago. But it’s so much work. I would have to tag every photo on its own. My use case goes more towards “give me all albums with squirrels”, though. Let’s see. I would need some tooling for easy tagging first. And then, the question is, which categories do I want to have to begin with?

Azabache returned just a few minutes later when the sparrow or great/blue tit was gone. Next time I will use a tripod to record the video. Also sorry about the sound, I used all my Audacity skills to remove the noise, but somehow, combining the video and audio track in kdenlive somehow messed up the sound. There’s some horrible sqealing towards the beginning.

The sun was out and tricked everybody to believe it’s nice and warm. However, with the wind, the 11°C felt way colder. Still, super nice out there, I enjoyed it a lot. The quick trip to the dairy farm took me more than double the regular time, because I took close to 400 photos. Oh boy, Lyse is such an idiot!

@falsifian@www.falsifian.org Correct, the two smaller versions are loading perfectly fine. The hickup is only for the originals. But in all reality, the middle ones are sufficient for me personally. Please don’t get me wrong, at least for the people photos, the subjects are large enough. The Japanese landscapes, however, would definitely benefit from a bit more detail. ;-)

I just tried it once more, and now, the tree with the sign (/photo/5Zy4pqVIt0oP/IMG_20251106_035048_448.jpg) fully loaded very quickly. Same with the Japanese dish (/photo/tJbmg8oleYbh/IMG_20251030_091719_086.jpg) and shopping center (/photo/qXG5ucIjpPju/IMG_20251029_045002_778.jpg). But the previous and next ones all ran into the same problems again. When I’m very lucky, I eventually get the upper half. Typically not even that much, a third, a fifth, or even less.

Waiting a bit before making an attempt, the wooden walkway through the forest or park (/photo/ojQpDLfBoGN4/IMG_20251023_043829_011.jpg) eventually also made it. But unlike the other successful attempts, it took a long time.

The more photos you add, the more beneficial it might be to separate the index into several different albums. I didn’t measure it, but it felt like 10 to 20 seconds for all the thumbnails to load. That traffic adds up.

Another idea would be to strip the EXIF data from the thumbnails and reducing quality to 90% or even 80%. Using the famous tree with the sign, I cannot tell the difference between the original thumbnail and the 80% quality one. I’m sure it depends on the subject. Here are the numbers:

The photos have three sizes (thumbnail, photo page, and original if you click the img tag on the photo page); can you at least see the smaller two sizes? Maybe I will do some experimental fetches and/or start measuring things on my web server.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de I’ve got the same problem that you had the other day: finding past temperature data. But yeah, it looked much warmer than it actually was. Maybe 5°C? Possibly less when I found myself in the snow- and rainstorm in the end.

With the wind, my fingers were frozen. I should have worn gloves. Without them, I could only put my hands in the pockets of my jacket. That didn’t help much, though, because I frequently stopped to take yet another photo, so they cooled off again right away. :-D

Balancing the big/long, closed umbrella under my arm while I had my hands burried was also a little tricky.

First world problems. :-)

There was an endless coming and going of sun, clouds and rain. Not to forget about the wind. I called it quits a bit earlier and went into the woods.

Towards the end I was completeley surrounded by rain curtains in all directions. This looked super cool. I thought I might make it home just in time without having to use my umbrella, but the rain clouds were way quicker than I anticipated. Just after the rain hit me, I met an acquaintance who just started his walk. The wind picked up hard and rain hammered down, mixed with snow. Holding the umbrella was a workout. Shortly after I returned, the rain stopped again.

I didn’t notice the kestrel sitting on the tree when I took the last photo. That was a nice surprise when I sorted through the nearly 300 pics.

What a beautiful, beautiful 0°C Sunday arvo and evening! The weather forecast delayed the snow by the minute. An hour or so after it finally started very, very lightly, I headed off for the woods to check out the lake again. Unfortunately, with the fresh snow layer, the crazy wild surface texture of the ice sheet wasn’t visible anymore. But it brought some other nice views and photo opportunities.

I initially thought that I just go for a quick turn. However, with the snowfall a wee bit increasing I was hooked and kept going. Visibility was poor, but the snow blankets just looked too stunning. The road surfaces were quite slippery, so I often just walked alongside the pathways. On downhill slopes I had some good fun sliding down the road on my feet. With varying success. Luckily, I managed not to fall.

On the summit of the mountain the twigs had those absolutely magnificently looking windblown crystal coverings. Awwwwwww! They never get old. It was already getting dark, so the camera was tired and wanted to sleep. The snow program then made use of the flash and I’m quite pleased with how these shots turned out.

Two deer crossed the road in front of me and ran into the woods, that was sight for sore eyes. Although I felt bad that they had to flee from me in this white terrain. By the time I got home, the snow had accumulated around eight centimeters in height, even in town down in the valley. Walking on this fresh snow is just amazing. And I love the sound it makes. Today, the snow consistency must have been just right, because the crushing sound was really loud.

I cannot recall that I had frozen hair and beard before, but today, there was a thick ice buildup. In case I had, it was definitely never this much. Felt really cool.

Sharing some photos of our Vietnam trip so far…

@kiwu@twtxt.net I’ve no idea about regulations in your area, but over here there are different taxation rules for video and photo cameras. Hence, manufacturers limit the video recording time of photo cameras typically to half an hour, so that they don’t classify as video cameras with their higher taxes.

@kiwu@twtxt.net It also greatly depends on what kind of videos you plan to record. When you go, let’s say, diving, the specs need to be probably more suited to that type of environment. What about zoom, macro shots, wide landscapes, and so on? When typically mounted on a tripod, I’d say builtin image stabilization is not required, but for more action shots, this is fairly important to not get sea sick. :-)

I’ve got a Nikon Coolpix S9300. I typically only take photos, but it also works for the occasional video. Free hand moves are quite difficult, but when mounted to a tripod, this is not too shabby. There’s absolutely no way around a (makeshift) tridpod when zooming in, though. The audio is definitely not the best, especially wind destroys everything. If I recorded more video, I would certainly want to have an external microphone.

I had no meetings this arvo, so I made an appointment with the woods in my extended lunch break. The 6°C warm sun was out all day long and there was only a very light breeze. So, a very nice autumn day.

When I stopped to take a photo in the forest, a deer behind me took off into the woodland. I didn’t see it before. Also, I came across one or the other clearing. Sadly, it’s all commercial timberland here. Luckily, in a year or so, when nature slowly took over and reclaimed some spots, the apocalyptic sites are then looking a bit more decent again.

Cleaning of the ruin walls on my backyard mountain slowly takes shape. They made some progress and moved on to the other section. The flag on top is halfway disintegrated again, all the yellow half is completely gone. I’m wondering if they just stop replacing it at some point in time. But probably not.

Don’t think this is the norm, though, most stuff here is also much more modern. There are not a whole lot of historic buildings left. And if there are, they’re not necessarily kept in good shape. But some are. So, don’t be fooled by my biased preselection of typically photographing the nicer ones.

The people photos are not for the internet. ;-) But I get your point, the reason why I ended up in that town is irrelevant and misleading, I should have introduced it differently. :-D
