GNOME 48 released
One of the two major open source desktop environments, GNOME, just released version 48, and it’s got some very big and welcome improvements. First and foremost there’s dynamic triple-buffering, a feature that took over five years of extensive testing to get ready. It will improve the smoothness and fluidity of animations and other movements on the screen, as it did for KDE when it landed there in the middle of last year. GNOME 48 also brings notification stacking, combining notifications from th … ⌘ Read more

In-reply-to » Hi! For anyone following the Request for Comments on an improved syntax for replies and threads, I've made a comparative spreadsheet with the 4 proposals so far. It shows a syntax example, and top pros and cons I've found: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KOUqJ2rNl_jZ4KBVTsR-4QmG1zAdKNo7QXJS1uogQVo/edit?gid=0#gid=0

also I’ve made a draft of a voting page to receive preferences on each proposal
https://eapl.me/rfc0001/

Help me to play with it a bit and report any vulnerability or bug. Also any idea is welcome.

In-reply-to » Got myself a proper bass amp and now I really want to live in a small house in the middle of nowhere, where I won’t bother anyone. 😅

@movq@www.uninformativ.de woah! MV, for what I read on Wikipedia, is a fantastic, almost fantasy like state. Very low density on population. Matter of fact, they seem to be having issues with population growth, and will certainly welcome a bass player addicted, esoteric programmer, that would otherwise be a pretty quiet person. A win-win! :-D

In-reply-to » @xuu Despite that these AoC math text problems are rather silly in my opinion (reminds me of an exercise in our math book where somebody wanted to carry a railroad rail around an L-shaped corner in the house and the question was how long that rail could be so that it still fits — sure, we've all carried several meter long railroad rails in our houses by ourselves numerous times…), these algorithms are really neat!

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org They sure are silly at times. :-) You really have to combine this event with something else, like learning a new language. Otherwise it gets boring real quick.

What I absolutely love about AoC is that it’s – indeed – a bit like school. 😅 The problems are well-defined, the inputs are well-defined, and there is a definite answer. It’s either right or wrong – period. Compared to real life and work, I welcome this very much. 🤣

Li-Fi, light-based networking standard released
Today, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has added 802.11bb as a standard for light-based wireless communications. The publishing of the standard has been welcomed by global Li-Fi businesses, as it will help speed the rollout and adoption of the  data-transmission technology standard. Where Li-Fi shines (pun intended) is not just in its purported speeds as fast as 224 GB/s. Fraunhofer’s Dominic Schulz points ou … ⌘ Read more

I’ve seen BlueSky referred to as BS (as in Blue Sky, but you know…), which seems apt.

CEO is a cryptocurrency fool, as is Jack Dorsey, so I don’t expect much from it. Then again I’m old and refuse to join any new hotness so take my curmudgeonly opinions with a grain of salt.

I read somewhere or another that the “decentralization” is only going to be there so that they can push content moderation onto users. They will happily welcome Nazis and fascists, leaving it up to end users to block those instances.

I wonder how they plan to handle the 4chan-level stuff, since that will surely come.
