i have been on a ROLL fixing server issues the other day i fixed my dead SFTP server which had a chroot permission issue

We went up our backyard mountain again right after lunch. The sun peaked through the clouds sometimes. The 6°C felt much, much cooler with the northeast wind. We got lucky, though, it was dead calm at the summit. At least on the southwestern side, which is a few meters lower than the very top to the east. That was shielded absolutely perfectly from the wind (we were extremely surprised), so we sat down on a bench and could really enjoy the sun heating us up. Apart from the haze, the view was really nice.

There were even patches of snow left up top, that was unexpected. Also, somebody created a cool rock art piece on a tree stump. That one rock absolutely looked like a face. Crazy!

Took today off work. My workplace has a special form of leave called “My Day” that you can take in addition to your usual Annual leave. So nice! 😊 I’m using one of them today to take advantage of the long weekend coming up (Australia Day). Planning on making repairs to one of my Hypervisor nodes that is currently down and powered off for repairs. The SATA DOM (Disk on Module) boot disk is kind of dead and the controller refusing to take any new writes. It’s about ~5 years old 🤣

Plan is to take the machine out of the Rack, place it on my office desk to open it up. Plug in a new 2nd SATA DOM on another SAtA cable. Boot it back up with a Linux Rescue bootable ISO and do a dd of the old to the new. Then swap ‘em around and hope 🤞 for the best 😅

wald.ovh has 2 IPv4 addresses, one of which is dead and doesn’t respond.. That’s why accessing your website is so slow as depending on client and browser behaviors one of two things may happen 1) a random IP is chosen and ½ the time the wrong one is picked or 2) both are tried in some random order and ½ the time its slow because the broken one is picked.

If you don’t know what 86.243.228.45 is, or it’s a dead backup server or something, I’d suggest you remove this from the domain record.

Fuck me dead, what a giant piece of shit. On my Linux work laptop I have the problem that some unknown snakeoil “security” junk is dropping any IPv4 connections to ports 80 and 443. All other ports and IPv6 seem unaffected. I get an immediate “connection refused” when trying to estabslish a connection.

I had this problem four weeks ago on Friday morning the very first time at home. On Thursday evening, everything was perfectly fine. Eventually, I plugged in the LAN cable in the office and everything got automatically fixed. Nobody can explain what’s happening.

Then, last week Friday morning out of the blue, the same issue was back. So, I went to the office yesterday and it got fixed again by plugging in the network cable. This evening, I have exactly the same bloody problem again.

What the hell is going on? Does anyone have any ideas? I’m certainly not an expert, but I don’t see anything suspicious in iptables or nft rules. I also do not see anything showing up in /var/log/kern.log. Even tried to stop firewalld, flush the iptables and nft rules, but that didn’t result in any changes.

that’s a neat solution to the dead old feeds problem. pull-once-once-on-notify seems to fit the gemini tx model better than scraping pages on a cron timer. i don’t have a mechanism in my setup to produce that event yet other than the cron that rebuilds the capsule periodically, but that’s just a stand-in for not having any CI rn and especially not a CI that works with fossil.

Gotta unplug for a couple of minutes. I’m suspecting the extension cord to be the root of my monitor dead rows of pixels and flickering problems.

Would the GDPR would apply to a one-person client like jenny? I seriously hope not. If someone asks me to delete an email they sent me, I don’t think I have to honour that request, no matter how European they are.

I am really bothered by the idea that someone could force me to delete my private, personal record of my interactions with them. Would I have to delete my journal entries about them too if they asked?

Maybe a public-facing client like yarnd needs to consider this, but that also bothers me. I was actually thinking about making an Internet Archive style twtxt archiver, letting you explore past twts, including long-dead feeds, see edit histories, deleted twts, etc.

So this is a great thread. I have been thinking about this too.. and what if we are coming at it from the wrong direction? Identity being tied to a given URL has always been a pain point. If i get a new URL its almost as if i have a new identity because not only am I serving at a new location but all my previous communications are broken because the hashes are all wrong.

What if instead we used this idea of signatures to thread the URLs together into one identity? We keep the URL to Hash in place. Changing that now is basically a no go. But we can create a signature chain that can link identities together. So if i move to a new URL i update the chain hosted by my primary identity to include the new URL. If i have an archived feed that the old URL is now dead, we can point to where it is now hosted and use the current convention of hashing based on the first url:

The signature chain can also be used to rotate to new keys over time. Just sign in a new key or revoke an old one. The prior signatures remain valid within the scope of time the signatures were made and the keys were active.

The signature file can be hosted anywhere as long as it can be fetched by a reasonable protocol. So say we could use a webfinger that directs to the signature file? you have an identity like frank@beans.co that will discover a feed at some URL and a signature chain at another URL. Maybe even include the most recent signing key?

From there the client can auto discover old feeds to link them together into one complete timeline. And the signatures can validate that its all correct.

I like the idea of maybe putting the chain in the feed preamble and keeping the single self contained file.. but wonder if that would cause lots of clutter? The signature chain would be something like a log with what is changing (new key, revoke, add url) and a signature of the change + the previous signature.

Correct, @bender@twtxt.net. Since the very beginning, my twtxt flow is very flawed. But it turns out to be an advantage for this sort of problem. :-) I still use the official (but patched) twtxt client by buckket to actually fetch and fill the cache. I think one of of the patches played around with the error reporting. This way, any problems with fetching or parsing feeds show up immediately. Once I think, I’ve seen enough errors, I unsubscribe.

tt is just a viewer into the cache. The read statuses are stored in a separate database file.

It also happened a few times, that I thought some feed was permanently dead and removed it from my list. But then, others mentioned it, so I resubscribed.

Not the black man who was allegedly murdered by Penny in view of the public, and who is now dead. Penny himself, who is still very much alive.

Why is Google such a mess at making messaging apps? This has more or less been a solved problem for decades. Google Talk worked well enough, and since it was based on XMPP and Jingle it was perfectly suited to become a large-scale text/voice/video messaging system. If they’d run with that they’d have been able to dominate that space, I think. Instead, they’ve created and shitcanned half a dozen messaging apps and platforms, flailing around copying someone else’s app (now they’re trying to copy Slack I guess).
